Benjamin A. Gilman offers International Scholarships

  • The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program enables U.S. undergraduate students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to U.S. national security and economic prosperity. They will gain proficiency in diverse languages and cultures, skills that are critically important to their academic and career development. The program aims to encourage students to study and intern in a diverse array of countries or areas and world regions. The program also encourages students to study languages, especially critical need languages (those deemed important to national security).

    Eligibility:

    Gilman Scholarship recipients can only receive the scholarship once. If a student previously declined the Gilman Scholarship, they are welcome to re-apply, as long as they still meet all eligibility requirements, as follows:

    • A citizen of the United States;
    • An undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States (including both 2-year and 4-year institutions);
    • Receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship;
    • In the process of applying to, or accepted for, a study abroad or internship program of at least 2 weeks for community college students and 3 weeks for students from 4-year institutions, eligible for credit from the student’s home institution.

    Multi-country, multi-area, and multi-city programs are eligible and there is no minimum requirement on the length of time spent in 1 country, city, or area.

    The entirety of the program abroad must be at least 2 weeks (14 days) for community college students and 3 weeks (21 days) for students from 4-year institutions. There are no maximum or minimum number of countries, cities, or, areas. Proof of program acceptance is required prior to award disbursement;

    Students can study and intern abroad during the spring, summer, fall, winter, or academic year term. Applicants must also submit a Community Impact Essay when applying.

    The October 2020 deadline application will open for applicants whose programs start between 1 December 2020, to 31 October 2021, in mid-August 2020. This cycle encompasses Winter 2021, Spring 2021, Summer 2021, Fall 2021, and AY 2021-2022 programs.

    The March 2020 deadline application is closed for applicants whose programs that start between 1 May 2020 to 30 April 2021. This cycle encompasses Summer 2020, Fall 2020, AY 2020-2021, Winter 2021, and Spring 2021 programs.
