The mechanics of dissertation writing

  • If you are required to work on your own dissertation or you are trying to help a friend in dissertation writing then you are in the right place reading this article. This article is designed to help you deliver basic dissertation writing tips and help you understand the mechanics of dissertation writing.

It is important to understand that dissertation writing is somewhat different from other genres of writing and must be attempted as such. Here are some of the most important points to understand that mechanics of dissertation.

    1. Dissertation writing is all about maintaining a flow. Unlike other forms of writing, you must flow your writing without going back and forth to revise what you may find unsuitable. This can be your worst enemy while writing a dissertation. It is vital to maintain a flow of thoughts. You can revisit to revise after you are done with writing.

    2. Create an outline to follow. It would give more coherence to writing subsequently. The basic idea is to create a framework of ideas to follow. Such draft helps in well organized content.

    3. It is important to structure a dissertation in layers. You must arrange the crude ideas in first place, followed by gap fillings and capped by citing the content.

    4. The most important element is a dissertation is originality. It means! you must always start with what you already know. It may be in the form of personal ideas or a story that you can tell. Researched content can follow but only after your original story.

    5. It is critical to write your dissertation on daily basis. A correct order may not be essential but writing one page is. You can go for more than one page writing if your timeline dictates or your schedule allows.

    6. The first of your writing can be in the form of a very rough draft. You can revisit the content for any refinements or error corrections. You can even make a powerpoint presentation of your ideas for more clarity and focus.

    7. The first draft of a dissertation is always written for “yourself” and outward. It is only after decent volume is written that you must revise it to be directed towards the target audience.

    8. Dissertations are tricky and difficult to follow an exact format. It is smart to write them without following a set piece format. You can even write the middle sections first and add the introduction and conclusion subsequently.

    9. Goal setting is crucial in dissertation writing. You can set organic goals with small measurable achievement patterns to remain consistent. It is important to keep track of the time you spend writing each day to plan your progress. Never write more than 7 hours a day (though 5 hours is preferable and recommended). Don’t forget to take decent breaks of 15 minutes every couple of hours to maintain your focus.

    10. Last but not the least, always reward yourself with a treat on successful completion of a target. This is important to maintain your impetus.
